You know that feeling you have when everything just seems right? Well, that is the feeling I have had today as I survey my surroundings. I can't read any of the signs or understand the language that is spoken to me, but I just know that this is where God wants me. I know that this is just the beginning stage of culture shock...but I am enjoying it anyway. I was up at 6am this morning, so I decided to take a walk to 7-11 to get some breakfast...my very first outing by myself!! It was nice to just take in my surroundings and enjoy the sights of people going off to work or just arrive to open up their shops and stands. I even had the pleasure of "talking" with a very nice Thai man who tried to tell me where other food places are. Amazing how we can communicate with others by using hand motions :-).
There where two big outings today. One was to Big C for my first true grocery shopping trip. It is amazing how long it can take to grocery shop when you can't read the language and have to search every inch of packages for clues as to what it is or any bit of English you can find (which is not always helpful). I ended up buying the Thai version of Ramen noodles, muffins, and watermelon. We learned how to say "no spice" (mai pet) so we asked if the packages we had were "mai pet". The worker said they were the non-spicy kind....oh my goodness!! If that was the non-spicy kind, I can't imagine what spicy tastes like! Let's just say that I will be sure to limit the amount of the seasoning I use next time.
The second outing was our first into Bangkok. We went to a part of the city that is popular for backpackers. To get to this place, we had to do a lot of walking, a river taxi, and then a lot more walking. We ended up eating at a Middle Eastern place, that was quite tasty and well worth the travel:-).
I am thankful for new friends/roommates Laura and Justina!! :-) I am also so very thankful to have my bestie here as well!! Love that girl!! I am sure that it will be an exciting year. Hopefully we will have our apartment feeling a little more "homey" and more inviting within the next month.
Prayer requests:
*School starting - the 13th
*going through culture shock
*not getting too overwhelmed and stressed by the new culture
Jeremiah 29:11-13
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart." Jer. 29:11-13

Day 1: Exploring the Neighborhood
We decided to go and explore 7-11 for some essentials that we needed (body wash, lotion, bug spray, etc.) I am praising God that I came to visit here a few months ago, because it certainly made it easier and a little less scary to be walking around in a strange place where there are only a few signs are readable.
We found a few things at 7-11 but decided to keep walking and found a superstore called Big C. Shock and awe, is the only way I could describe the feeling we all had when we walked it. It is about the size of two Wal-Marts put together and had two levels!!! It was massive!! We of course couldn't most of the brands, so we relied on pictures to help us figure out what things were. We wanted to get nail polish remover, but couldn't find anything that looked anything like what we would find at home. We finally found something that said nail enamel remover. We finally decided to try to ask a worker and she just gave us a blank stare. So i grabbed a bottle of nail polish and Justina had what we were assuming was remover. I then pretended to paint my nails and then pointed to the bottle and pretended to remove the nail polish. She looked as if she understood and then opened a cabinet to give us a small piece of cotton. Miming definitely works lol.
We looked around for a bit and then heard loud thunder...it was pouring buckets of rain outside!!! We had about a 20 min walk back to the school. So we decided to go ahead and start walking back, fearing that it would get worse. It got worse and we hadn't made it out of the parking lot of Big C yet.So, we decided to go back into the Big C and buy umbrellas. In the end we were all soaked even with the umbrellas!! We learned two valuable lessons during this excursion: 1. don't go anywhere without an umbrella....a very large umbrella 2. don't go anywhere without shoes that are good for walking in rain (flip-flops are not good for walking in rain)
The hardest part about the rain was not being able to communicate with anyone. We didn't know how to give directions back to the school, so we couldn't get in any of the taxi's or tuk-tuks. We didn't have phones, so there was no one to call to pick us up. We were just stuck there to wait it out or to just had to brave the weather and walk back. Luckily it was warm rain, so walking back in it wasn't too bad. We were just really wet lol.
The rest of the day included taking a nap (even though we knew we weren't supposed to) and going to a local restaurant for dinner. The restaurant didn't have menus...but luckily the lady spoke a little bit of English and I had eaten there before, so I knew they had fried rice. She was especially nice to us, knowing that we are teachers at GES.
I am definitely still in a stage of feeling lost and a bit overwhelmed at times. I am sure that part of this has to do with the jet lag and the over part has to do with the culture shock. Even having been here before, I am still in awe and feel out of place. Pray that God helps me to ease into my new surroundings.

I made it!
I finally made it to Bangkok at 10:30 pm on Thursday (I think that would be about 8:30 am on Thursday in the States.) The flights over where good. On my first flight to Seattle I sat next to a lady who was from Thailand!!! Definitely reassurance that moving to Thailand is where I was supposed to be :-)
When I arrived the temperature was 86 degrees!!! It is definitely going to take me awhile to get used to the heat. Going through customs was fine, although on my way through the exit I was the one person out of a very large amount of people to be stopped and have my bags scanned, yet again lol. I don't know what I could have possibly put in them from the time of getting them off of the baggage carousel to the ten steps it took me to walk to the exit lol.
I was the first to arrive at the apartment and Brittney and Justina came about an hour or so later. We all stayed up and unpacked...well what we could anyway. We have a few pieces of furniture, but no hangers to hang clothes, or enough storage bins to store toiletries and things like that.
God certainly protected me and got me here safe. Now the adventure begins!!
